The Certificate IV in Interior Decoration (MSF40118) is for those who are passionate about a career in design.

We have designed this nationally accredited course to suit a range of exciting career outcomes from Interior Decorator, Interior Stylist to Homewares Specialist, Colour Consultant – the list goes on! All students have access to our uniquely designed online learning platform, making hands-on learning accessible and practical. We believe in industry-based teaching, which we deliver through a combination of assessment-based and skills learning. Want to network with the best in the industry with guest speakers, styling photoshoots and more? You’ve come to the right place! 

We understand learning is not a one-size fits all. Weekly sessions with your trainer, video lessons featuring bonus house tours, interviews and real-life projects, as well as your own worksheets and templates ensure your learning is interactive, relevant and supported.

We want you to undertake our Certificate IV in Interior Decoration in a way that suits your learning style and location. Choose from our three different modes of delivery, each running for approximately 12 months.

A Certificate IV in Interior Decoration is now more accessible than ever with three delivery modes

Classroom 
Training is held one day per week in our bright studio space in Collingwood, Victoria, from 9:30am – 3pm. An additional study load outside of class time is estimated at around 6-8 hours per week.

Online
Training is delivered one day per week over a two-hour live video class on a select weekday from 12-2pm. The study load for Online learning is an estimated 10-12 hours per week.

Hybrid
Training is delivered one day per week over a two-hour live video class on a select weekday from 12-2pm, with an additional in person industry experience held one day per month. The study load for Hybrid learning is an estimated 10-12 hours per week.

There are two Hybrid training facilities.

  • Design School - 43 Derby Street, Collingwood, Victoria.
  • Design School - 8 Harris Street, Maryville, NSW.

Training is delivered one day per week over a two-hour live video class, with an additional in person industry experience held one Saturday per month. The study load for Hybrid learning is an estimated 10-12 hours per week.

Why study Interior Decoration at Design School?

Our Certificate IV in Interior Decoration course involves 17 accredited Units of Competency including 7 core and 10 electives that have been carefully selected by us. This has enabled us to create a course featuring the topics we believe are most industry relevant, such as Making a Materials Board and Selecting Hard Materials.

We deliver this learning across twelve, hands on Modules.

This nationally accredited course will challenge and inspire you to create beautiful spaces; it’s your entry point to an exciting career in design!

Modules 1-4 are our foundation subjects where you will develop the critical skills to:

  • research and analyse design,

  • build your creative vocabulary to help define your signature style, 

  • visually express your ideas through drawing, and

  • navigate the world of working with clients and the law.           

Modules 5-10 is where our students undertake one of their favourite portfolio pieces of the course; The Dream Brief. We deep dive into the design process where you get to create unique concepts that truly reflect your voice as a decorator. Key skills include creating:  

  • technical drawing to scale, 

  • 3D computer generated models (SketchUp), 

  • mood boards,

  • material boards, 

  • client presentations.

Modules 11 and 12 is where you get a taste for the worlds of Visual Merchandising and Interior Styling. You may develop a passion (and portfolio!) for working as a real-estate stylist, photography stylist, commercial decorator, or brand specialist, to name a few! 

Within every Module you will be guided through compiling an impressive design portfolio that you can use to showcase your abilities in design to future potential clients or employers. Career outcomes include interior decoration, interior styling, colour consulting, retail or brand specialists and more!

Minimum Requirements 

To undertake the Certificate IV in Interior Decoration (MSF40118), you will need to meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Have completed Year 10 level or equivalent.
  • Have regular access to a computer for Online and Hybrid and laptop for Classroom delivery.
  • Have intermediate to advanced understanding of computer skills. Computer skills will be tested prior to course entry.
  • Language, Literacy and Numeracy will be tested prior to course entry.

You may be eligible for subsidised study 

Where possible, we offer subsidised funding to eligible students in Victoria and New South Wales who enrol into the Certificate IV in Interior Decoration MSF40118. This accredited qualification is delivered through Design School, as part of RTO 91454 MP Training and Recruitment.

If you live outside Victoria or New South Wales, or are not eligible for funding, you're still able to access this training at a fee for service rate.
