For those new to interiors, returning to study after time away, or simply ready to explore the world of interior decoration, & styling.

The Fundamentals of Interior Decorating & Styling

A self-paced short-course designed as an introduction to the language, principles and creative thinking behind interior decoration and styling. Rather than focusing on software or technical drawing, the course introduces the ways decorators and stylists observe, analyse and shape a space — helping you begin to develop your own design eye and visual confidence.

Across five foundational Design School modules, you’ll explore key concepts including planning, colour, lighting, styling and materiality, while becoming familiar with the terminology and thinking that underpin professional interior decoration. For many students, Fundamentals is the first step before progressing into the Certificate IV in Interior Decoration, offering a supportive and inspiring place to begin.
Due to places in our Certificate IV qualification being limited, our Fundamental students are typically offered early access to upcoming intakes.
No prior design experience is required — just curiosity about interiors and a desire to begin seeing spaces differently.
The course covers:
  • 5 of of our favourite modules (Planning, Colour, Lighting, Styling and ...)
  • core interior terminology and principles
  • an introduction to colour, materials and styling
  • how interior decorators think and work
  • building confidence in decision-making and visual language
The Fundamentals Masterclass is ideal preparation for those considering the Certificate IV, offering a supportive and accessible starting point.

Certificate IV in Interior Decoration (coming soon)

The Professional Pathway Into Interior Decoration
The Certificate IV in Interior Decoration is the qualification that sits at the centre of Design School's learning pathway. Designed for those ready to pursue interior decoration professionally, the program develops the creative thinking, visual communication and industry awareness required to begin working within the design field.
Unlike traditional classroom-based training, the Design School approach focuses on developing a trained design eye, strong visual language and the ability to translate creative ideas into real interior environments.
Students learn to analyse spaces, build cohesive design concepts and communicate their ideas with clarity and confidence.
Delivery will be offered through an approved RTO partnership. Further details, including delivery structure and enrolment timelines, will be shared once confirmed.

What You Will Learn

The Certificate IV in Interior Decoration explores the foundational disciplines that underpin professional interior decoration practice.
Throughout the course, students develop an understanding of:
  • Spatial Planning, documentation & interior composition
  • Colour theory, palette development
  • materials, finishes & decorative elements
  • Lighting & atmosphere within interiors
  • Furniture, fixtures and equipment (FFE) selection
  • Styling and visual layering
  • Professional design communication & presentation
  • Sustainable and ethical design considerations
  • Working within industry contexts and constraints
Together, these areas form the creative framework used by interior decorators and stylists when shaping a space.

A Design School Approach

At Design School, learning is structured around the way interior decorators actually think and work.
Rather than focusing purely on technical drawing or software, the program emphasises concept development, visual thinking and material awareness.
Students are encouraged to develop their own design perspective while learning the principles that allow interiors to feel cohesive, balanced and considered.

Preparing for the Certificate IV

Because the qualification attracts strong interest each intake, we encourage prospective students to begin their journey with our Fundamentals Masterclass.
